Remember that in order to be most effective in the long term and to
help you improve your examination performance, you should use CAL to help you
review your progress. That means REVIEW tutorial materials THEN complete the
self assessments for further practice before you write the assignments which are for course marks.
While it can be useful to discuss them with your friends, they are there to
help you do better come examination time. If you waste the opportunity to learn
it for each self assessment, then when will you do it?
This page summarises the coverage of each CAL self assessment and provides links to the review materials. This should help you with your studying for Chem 351. The self assessments are accessible from any computer with internet access.
First CAL session
For the first CAL session, the recommended tasks are:
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.1 covers basic functional group recognition and the nomenclature of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and alkyl halides.
Most of this material will be review from Chem
201/203, but it is important, it is the basis of organic nomenclature.
The on-line self assessment has a 50 minute time limit.
In order to be ready to complete the e-homework you should work FIRST through the CAL materials and / or the appropriate material from the course textbook as you require. The following CAL materials on NOMENCLATURE are available:
However, Chem 351 Nomenclature is also covered by the following sections in the textbook:
| "Organic Chemistry" by Jones 4th ed. | "Organic Chemistry" by Carey 8th ed. |

When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.1: NOMENCLATURE I (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment after January 16th).
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.2 expands on the previous nomenclature by application to other functional groups (e.g. alcohols, ethers, ketones, etc).
The on-line self assessment has a 50 minute time limit.
In order to be ready you should FIRST work through the CAL materials and / or the appropriate material from the course textbook as you require. You should also review your mistakes in CAL 351.1

SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.3 is based on the lecture material on structure and bonding covered so far this semester.
The worksheet covers the following topics - this essentially reviews lecture materials, links are provided to specific materials in the Organic Chemistry On-Line Learning Center
The materials on the USEFUL CONCEPTS page may also help you or the chapters in the Organic Chemistry On-Line Learning Center
When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.3: STRUCTURE & BONDING (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment)
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.4 covers the important core concept of acidity and basicity.
In addition to your lecture notes, the suggested materials to review to help you understand the topics are:
When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.4: ACIDITY & BASICITY (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment).
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.5 is based on the radical substitution (halogenations) reactions of hydrocarbon systems.
Suggestions of materials to review to help you understand the topics are:1. Links to important materials in the Organic Chemistry On-Line Learning Center (but you should look at Chapter 11, specifically sections 11.1, 11.3, 11.7, and 11.8 in Jones, or Ch4, Ch8 and Ch5 in Carey or the e-text, for the more general issues)
When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.4: RADICAL SUBSTITUTION (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment).
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.6 covers the basics of spectroscopy and structure determination.
Suggestions of materials to review to help you understand the topics are:
1. Links to materials on the Index of Hydrogen Defficiency (IHD) and Elemental Analysis calculations.
2. Links to important materials in the Spectroscopy Chapter of the Organic Chemistry On-Line Learning Center
4. Other WWW Materials:
Useful materials can be located at the sites below. The problems are good
practice for CAL 5.
When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.5: BASIC SPECTROSCOPY (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment)
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.7 is based on substitution and elimination reactions that involve alcohols, alkyl halides and alkenes.
1. Links to important materials in the Organic Chemistry On-Line Learning Center (but you should look at Chapters 7 and 8 in Jones, or Ch4, Ch8 and Ch5 in Carey or the e-text, for the more general issues)
When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.7: NUCLEOPHILIC SUBSTITUTION & ELIMINATION REACTIONS (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment).
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.8 covers the basics of conformational analysis as found in Chapter 3 of Carey or Chapters 2 and 5 of Jones.
Suggestions of materials to review to help you understand the topics are:
When you have completed the practice materials, there is a self-assessment similar to the assignment, self assessment CAL 351.8: CONFORMATIONAL ANALYSIS (click on title to go to Moodle in order to complete the self assessment).
SELF ASSESSMENT CAL 351.9 covers the concepts of oxidation & reduction as they apply to organic chemistry.
