Substituted Sugars

• One or more -OH groups can be replaced by other atoms or groups leading to substituted sugars.
• Common naturally aoocuring substitutents are:
• -H   deoxy sugars
• -NH₂ amino sugars (the N atom can be further substituted, for example, an amide, -NHC(=O)CH₃
• - R branched chain sugars e.g. CH₂OH or -CH₃
• An example of each is shown below with the "substituent" highlighted:
