If you are wondering if you have to
repeat the laboratory and CAL components, read on....
CAL
is there to help you learn as you go if used
correctly. Since a D+ or worse grade typically results from poor examination
performance, CAL should help you improve those examination grades if used correctly. Therefore, you are
required to repeat the CAL component.
LABORATORY
If you have taken the course before, and
(1)
it was here at the University of Calgary and
(2) it was within the last 2 academic years and
(3) you got 75% or more on the laboratory
component,
Then you can opt not to repeat the laboratory work. You can check your previous
laboratory mark by going to see the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Carol Crooks or Grace Whitehead, in the Chemistry main office, SA109.
Starting Winter 2011 if you opt out of the laboratory then
the old laboratory coursemark can be carried into this semester.
Other factors to consider... (1) You should be able to improve your laboratory mark if you repeat the laboratory
component. (2) The laboratory component is a good place
to forge study relationships with other students in the course. (3) The laboratory work relates to reactions etc.
talked about in lectures. (4) If you just opt out to "save time",
you probably will not improve your grade (see below). FYI.... in the past we estimated that in the regular school
year (i.e. F and W), only about 1 in 10 of those who repeat
and opt out end up improving their grade..... those that do improve have often
made major changes to their academic lives and how they view studying
etc. In the spring / summer semesters it is not so clear because
of the time restrictions.
IN ORDER TO OPT OUT, you will need to go to the Chem main office, SA 109 to check / confirm your previous laboratory grade and fill in the required paperwork. After that you will need to see
the current laboratory coordinator ( identified on the course information sheet). Once you have completed the appropriate forms with all the signatures, you will be given half the form for you to
keep for your records, the other half will be kept on file with laboratory coordinator.
The process MUST BE COMPLETED including all signatures by the last day for the change of
registration for that semester.
