+1. The Br atom has two lone pairs and
is involved in 2 σ bonds. Halogens such as Br are considered to
have 7 valence electrons. Hence we get 7 - 2 - 4 = +1. Or if you look at the mechanism for the reaction, you should be able to see how the Br lone pair is being used to form the second σ bond - hence the Br has one more bond than normal. Review formal charges ? |
