JSMOL

JSMOL a free browser tool that allows you to INTERACTIVELY visualise and manipulate molecules in 3D.

In order to get the JSMOL to work, you need to have scripting enabled on your computer.
If things are set up correctly you should be able to see a ball and stick model of a molecule in a black square below.

JSMOL is also used in the online organic e-learning materials and in the Chem 351/353 online assignments.

The first time JSMOL is used in each session, it can sometimes be a little slow. Please be patient.

When using JSMOL, please note that by clicking on the image with:
  • the LEFT mouse button allows you to rotate the molecule
  • the LEFT mouse button and keyboard SHIFT or the wheel allows you to zoom in and out
  • the RIGHT mouse button gives you access to a menu of other features
  • Try this out with the image to the right.

Remember the NORMAL atom colour code: C = grey, O = red, N = blue, H = white, S = yellow, Br = maroon, Cl = green

For UofC students, if these things don't solve your problems, then try calling a computer expert, such as those at the UofC IT help desk.
