|Chapter 15: Alcohols, Diols
Hydrolysis of Alkyl
Reaction type: Nucleophilic
(review of Chapter 8)
- Alkyl halides can be converted
to alcohols using water or hydroxide as the nucleophile.
- Mechanism is a simple nucleophilic
- Elimination reactions can be
a problem particularly if hydroxide is used.
- Not particularly common as alkyl
halides are most often prepared from alcohols.
