CHEM351F25 wk03, Sept 15-19 2025

This is written based on L02 in-person progress but this will help also L01 students keep track of where they should be. Dr Causton's L03 might be navigating a slightly different path in his "story".

CAL TUTORIALS (SA204)

All students are expected to now be registered in Moodle, if not, please do so immediately (otherwise you might not be able to complete your pre-lab quiz!). Once you are registered, email Dr Hunt and tell him you have added AND what lab section you are registered in.
This week you should be preparing for CAL assignment 1 (to be written in wk 04). Follow the link for the content details.
Nomenclature sections 1-9 should be your main nomenclature focus from the etext. Learn content first, work drill questions on the etext pages THEN try Moodle self assessments.
Don't forget to review the structure and function topics !
Use the tutorial TA in SA204 to get help for your questions and guiding your progress.

LABORATORY

All students must have completed & passed the Dept of Chemistry Safety Course (see D2L) before they are allowed to do ANY laboratory experiments.
Students who are have not completed and passed the course will not be allowed to attend the laboratory session (nor will they be approved for a make-up session). We will be checking each day!
This week is the first experiment on "solubility". Make sure you complete the pre-lab quiz (Moodle, available from 06:00 the day before until 30 mins before your laboratory session) and the pre-lab summary to the appropriate D2L Dropbox, see the CHEM351F25 student laboratory manual for more details.
Laboratory safety : remember the dress code, that you need laboratory safety coat and glasses (Bookstore).
You also need the self-duplicating laboratory notebook (Bookstore)

Wk 3
(Sept 16-20)

Continue: bond properties, molecular geometries, acidity and pKa, molecular geometries (using VSEPR)
What happens at the molecular level when atoms interact to form bonds ?
Electron density animation of 2 interacting H atoms -> H₂
How do covalent bonds form and what are molecular orbitals ? Bonding and anti-bonding orbitals. Why no He₂ ?
Bonding in organic systems : hybridisation for hydrocarbons, and then heteroatom systems. (Flash animation for visualising hybridisation).

Wk 2
(Sept 9-13)

Chemistry 351 concept map (the big picture connecting the concepts together).
The language of organic chemistry: "text and symbols", examples.
Definitions of key terms: functional group, nucleophile, electrophile, leaving group, electronegativity, resonance.
Drawing line diagrams. Curly arrows.
Structure and Bonding: etext Ch1 : The relationship of structure and function. Atomic structure and terminology. Bonding, bond types.

(Sept 3-6)

Introduction to Organic Chemistry I. Overview of course components, using TopHat etc.
What to expect, what to do, what not to do etc. How to work for your personal success. Our expectations.
What is organic chemistry ? What makes it difficult, how are we going to tackle it ?
